Malaysia wants to host World Blood Donor Day

By S.K. THANUSHA DEVI | skthanusha@nst.com.my

PETALING JAYA: MALAYSIAN Red Crescent (MRC)   will apply to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be the host of next year's World Blood Donor Day.
Its vice-chairman, Datuk Dr Bahari Abu Mansor, said it would be an honour for Malaysia to host such a healthy and global event.
However, there is one hurdle MRC must first overcome in order to play host to the annual event, which is celebrated on June 14.
"As a developing country, we must have at least 10 per cent of the population donating blood regularly, as stated by WHO."
He was speaking at a blood donation drive organised by Media Prima Bhd at Sri Pentas in Bandar Utama, here.
MRC plans to host the event, if given approval by WHO, together with Media Prima and New Straits Times Press.
"If we can pull this off (the blood donation drive by Media Prima) on a bigger scale, more people will sign up to be donors," said Dr Bahari, referring to the 10 per cent requirement by WHO to host the World Blood Donor Day.
Media Prima executive director (news and editorial operations) Datuk Ahmad A. Talib said he was optimistic that hosting such an event could be done.
"We have transformed the foyer of Sri Pentas into a blood bank (for the blood donation drive) and there are so many people today (yesterday) who have pledged to be donors."
Themed "Every Blood Donor is a Hero", the event is jointly organised by the NSTP Volunteer Brigade, Media Prima and MRC, and supported by the National Blood Bank and Tampin Hospital, Negri Sembilan.
MRC chairman Tunku Tan Sri Shahriman Tunku Sulaiman said he was happy with the turnout for the drive.
"I see many youngsters here as first-time blood donors. This means that the awareness of blood donation has increased. I'm so proud of them."
Tunku Shahriman said MRC would continue to organise more blood donation drives, especially in rural areas, to educate the people on the importance of donating blood.
National Blood Bank deputy director Datuk Dr Faraizah Abdul Karim said the most difficult problem in blood donation was handling first-time blood donors.
"We have to explain to the first timers about the procedure and assure them it will be all right. They have to tell us their fears of blood or needles so that we know how to handle them.
"We would make sure that they are comfortable at all times during the procedures."
With Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri coming soon, said Dr Faraizah, the blood bank was desperate to collect as much blood as possible.
"We are worried about the first two weeks of Hari Raya. Everyone will go back to their kampung, so we need adequate supply in case of emergencies," she said.
Tampin Hospital mobile blood donation drive coordinator Ganga Devi B. Sinniah said it was a commendable effort in roping youngsters and staff of Media Prima to donate blood.
"Most of them are first timers, which is good. Some of them didn't have enough haemoglobin or didn't weigh enough, so we had to turn them away as it is not healthy for them to donate."
She said the hospital managed to collect about 175 pints of blood in the drive that was extended until 2pm because of the overwhelming response.
Companies which took part in the event include Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd, Unilever (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd, Nestle (M) Bhd, Mamee Double Decker (M) Bhd, Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd, Restoran Kelantan Delights and Dallis'cious Catering.

Repost: Why Me?

Are you one of our special blood group donors? Are you one with group Rhesus negative blood or Bombay blood group? Are you irritated with the blood bank staff who seem to be harassing you to donate blood at the most inappropriate times? Have you ever wondered “WHY ME?” Then this article is dedicated to you, our precious rare blood group donors.

Contrary to popular belief, blood groups are not only divided based on the ABO grouping (groups O, A, B & AB) and Rh grouping (positive & negative), although a vast number of our population fall easily into these groups. There are many other sub-groups and grouping methods employed which divides humans blood groups into more than 300 types! And some of these are pretty rare to find.

We also hardly get patients with such groups either so keeping stock of such blood is a waste if the blood bag expires before use. Therefore we resort to keeping a contact list of our rare blood group donors and we contact you when there’s a patient in need of your rare blood. We understand that you may sometimes be busy or held up, but do take a moment to answer the phone, to tell us your predicament. We are calling because a life is at stake, a life only you may be able to save.

Which brings us back to YOU, our rare blood group donors. YOU are unique, YOU are special. YOU have been born with the ability to help others in need by simply donating your precious blood. YOU are gifted.

This article is a tribute to all our registered rare blood group donors, it is our way of saying: “THANK YOU”.

And to everyone else, don’t be surprised if you were to get a call from us one day informing you that you too are “special”.

WHO and partners are encouraging communities everywhere to join the World Blood Donor Day 2011 campaign and “Paint the world red”, whether by symbolically colouring, covering or lighting monuments, popular landmarks and buildings in red; staging artistic, cultural or musical events with a red-coloured theme; or forming a "human blood drop" in prominent public places.

Dermalah darah. Jangan beri alasan lagi...

6. Saya terlalu lemah
  • Setiap orang mempunyai purata 4 liter hingga 7 liter darah didalam badan.
10. Derma darah akan membuatkan saya lemah
  • Isipadu darah akan kembali seperti sediakala selepas menderma darah. Anda dinasihatkan berehat seketika sambil menikmati jamuan ringan sebelum kembali bertugas. Elakkan aktiviti yang menggunakan tenaga maksima seperti bersenam buat beberapa jam selepas menderma darah
Maka fikir-fikirkanlah.....

Melaka Hari Ini: Penderma Darah Bertambah

Menurut Pakar Perunding Kanan, Unit Transfusi Perubatan, Patologi, Datin Dr. Nor Azian A.Samad, tabung darah menerima 24,790 pek pada 2007.

Tips for a Successful Donation

By following a few recommendations before, during and after your blood donation can help you make your donation experience as safe, successful and pleasant as possible.

Before Your Donation

* Blood Donation Tip - Eat Healthy Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as spinach, red meat, fish, poultry, beans, iron-fortified cereals and raisins.
* Get a good night's sleep.
* Drink an extra water and fluids before the donation.
* Eat a healthy meal before your donation.
* If you are a platelet donor, remember that your system must be free of aspirin for two days prior to donation.
* Remember to bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of ID.

During Your Donation

* Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.
* Let the nurse know if you have a preferred arm and show the staff any good veins that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood.
* Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read during the donation process.
* Take the time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshments area immediately after donating.

After Your Donation

* Drink plenty of fluids to replenish any fluids you lost during donation.
* Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for about six hours after donation.
* If you feel light headed, lie down, preferably with feet elevated, until the feeling passes.
* In rare cases when bleeding occurs after removing the bandage, apply pressure to the site and raise your arm for 3-5 minutes. If bleeding or bruising occurs under the skin, apply a cold pack to the area periodically during the first 24 hours.
* Enjoy the good feeling that comes with knowing that you may have saved as many as three lives.
